A wrong turn

Monday, 21 February 2011
Taman Rasuna, Jakarta

I took the wrong turn here the other day (6 February), during one of my bicycle trips from Cibubur to Kuningan. I wanted to try a different route, and I felt confident enough to not look at my GPS.

However, a wrong turn at Cijantung brought me south instead of north, which I discovered after a while… I finally gave up and admitted defeat, and let the GPS guide me on the way home instead.

A wrong turn.

Site under attack

Wednesday, 2 February 2011
Kopi Luwak, Epicentrum Walk, Jakarta

Yesterday I was in a state of shock… I suddenly discovered that some evil life forms had gained illegal access to this website and deleted all database tables. Everything was gone!

But thanks to the web hosting provider, who had a backup of the site, whereisrune.com is not gone forever! It would otherwise have been…

I submitted a ticket to the web hosting provider at 19:51, immediately after I discovered that the site was compromised, and at 22:28 the site was restored back to normal.

Yesterday morning I went on another of those bicycle trips around the city, and it happened to be another of those Sundays when jl Sudirman and jl Thamrin were closed to traffic.

In front of the Grand Hyatt at 07:30, Sunday.

Implementing Google Maps API V3

Friday, 28 January 2011
Taman Rasuna, Jakarta

I’m now finally done migrating from version 2 to version 3 of the Google Maps API, and all maps (so far 55) on this website are now implemented using Google Maps API V3.

In addition, I have improved/added some extra stuff:

  • Custom parsing of gpx files (from GPS devices) to javascript.
  • Replaced the crappy inline frames with divs.
  • Custom button to enlarge maps, in javascript.
  • Custom info windows, using the Google InfoBox library.
  • Clustering of many markers using the Google MarkerClusterer library.

And all is HTML5 and CC2 compliant!

Driving licence secured

Jakarta

Today I became the happy owner of two local driving licences, one for car, and the other for motorbike. I got those two pieces of plastic cards at Daan Mogot in West Jakarta.

I just had to show my passport and residence permit, and that’s it. Plus photo and fingerprint. No need to show my Norwegian driving licence. Quick & easy.

OK, I admit I also have had four driving lesson hours, in order to getting used to driving in the dense Jakarta traffic. The driving school (Natuna driving school in Cibubur) also arranged for the licences.

I have two more upcoming driving lesson hours on Sunday. I paid Rp 580k for 6 hours, and similar for the licence itself.
